What Are Elevenses?

In the UK, it’s almost a traditional tea-time practice, but actually, it’s not that old. In the early twentieth century, a concept known as Elenseves may have sprung up. However, according to British tea specialist Bruce Richardson, the term hasn’t been used in 1800s literature. Nevertheless, elevenses has strongly influenced British culture.

Elevenses, known as a short meal break around 11 am, is the most typical way to get a meal, which occurs after the proper breakfast and before the proper lunch.

Most people who take this break do so for one or two types of tasty snacks such as biscuits, cookies, cake, and a cup of tea.

For elevenses, although most people prefer cakes and muffins, I do love a savory snack. Then why not try Cream Cheese and Cucumber Sandwich?

The high society high quality of these sandwiches makes them a universal favorite. It’s easy to make but it’s ridiculously delicious.

These sandwiches are one of the quintessentially English foods, and they are not only tasty but also easy to make. They are ideal for lunches, elevenses, afternoon tea, or picnics.

A simple Veg Mayonnaise, cream cheese sandwich that can be cooked in the blink of an eye is easy to make and super healthy. Here’s how to make it. Having a sandwich is such a versatile dish, as it can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

You can make cucumber cheese sandwiches really easily and fast too. All you need is cream cheese, mayonnaise, and fresh herbs. I prefer dill and chives, but you can use whatever herbs you prefer. You can also use ranch dressing so the sandwich remains moist.

To serve the cucumbers, you will slice them thinly after mixing up the spread. I prefer English cucumbers since the seeds are small and delicate. I like them with the skin on for color, but they can also be eaten without the skin. I also add additional herbs and pepper for flavor.

Fresh herbs are combined with cream cheese to make a flavorful spread, and sliced cucumbers complete the refreshing taste.

I cannot imagine summer without cucumbers… these little sandwiches have been around for as long as I can remember… thin cucumber slices, dill, and cream cheese spread sandwiched between crustless bread, summer in every bite.

Cream Cheese Cucumber Sandwich

Ingredients

Bread – You should be able to use any type of bread you like, whether it is white milk bread, brown bread, or even whole wheat bread.

Vegetables – Here I added English cucumber round slices and chopped coriander leaves. You can replace the cucumber with diced tomato and tomato slices if you’d like. Some fresh lemon zest gives a fresh lemony flavor. Use it.

Cucumber – It has high water content, making it one of the most hydrating vegetables. Just peel the cucumber and slice them in round shape.

My favorite cucumber for making this sandwich is English cucumber since it has few seeds and tastes great. However, you can use any cucumber that is readily available to you.

Mayonnaise – It would be best if you choose to make this sandwich with full-fat mayonnaise. You can also add flavored mayonnaise to it if you want to add flavor. I have used eggless mayo here.

Cream Cheese – I use Britania full-fat cream cheese and they played an important role in creating delicious and appetizing sandwiches. They taste so heaven!!!!

Herbs – In addition to ingredients like dill leaves, herbs are important too. This recipe uses fresh chives, but fresh dill leaves can be used as well.

Seasoning – Salt and pepper ground freshly.

Important Suggestion To Keep In Mind

  • Make it vegan by using vegan cream cheese.
  • In the first place, the bread must be extremely soft. White bread is more traditional, though wholegrain is just as good. It’s the softness that’s important.
  • Second, make sure your cream cheese is spread thickly. This is a decadent sandwich, not one that should be eaten on a diet.
  • Thirdly, the cucumber’s skin should be removed and the slices should be sliced thinly, with just a little salt and pepper added, as it can quickly overpower the dish.
  • The best way to serve cucumber on a sandwich is with dill or mint leaves because together they pair wonderfully.
  • The cucumber sandwich’s crust may be removed if you want. Elites usually do this.
  • We, however, think that it’s a terrible waste of bread. Good food shouldn’t be wasted. I usually give them to birds outside and If you wish to make your dog/children/servants happy by eating said bread, then by all means go right ahead.

Serving Suggestion

A silver platter or silver bowl can look elegant in serving cucumber sandwiches, as can a spare set of china. However, a paper plate for a cucumber sandwich at an impromptu picnic is unacceptable.

Make it for dinner if you’re looking for a light meal. You can serve this for dinner with some salad, a light soup, or French fries on the side.

You can also serve some roasted zucchini wedges, baked sweet potato wedges, or roasted potatoes with this dish. light, easy food. It would be great with Green Chutney and a hot cup of coffee or tea.

I prefer them as it is. Rest is your choice friends.

Storage Suggestion

It is always best to prepare Sandwiches as fresh as possible since they will remain crisp when served hot while remaining soft and soggy if left for long.

When sliced, ensure the bread is covered with the dill cream cheese spread. Once placed in a container and sealed tightly, store in the refrigerator. I prefer to leave them at room temperature for about 20 minutes before serving.

I will recommend only a couple of days in the fridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make these sandwiches gluten-free and vegan?

This recipe can be made vegan by using vegan cream cheese and gluten-free bread. For a vegan version, use oil instead of butter and eggless mayonnaise.

The cucumber should be peeled before eating?

You can either peel it or don’t. Personally, I like to peel it to get a smooth cucumber slice, but if you don’t mind having dark green peel on your sandwich, you can slice them without peeling as well.
