A popular beverage in north India, Jal jeera is very cooling and is a great drink to have in the hot Indian summer. Apart from its cooling properties, it also has digestive properties, making it a popular appetizer.
In this video tutorial, you will learn how to prepare the perfect Indian summer drink, Jal Jeera. The drink’s unique flavor derives from roasted cumin, ground black pepper, and black salt, along with fresh coriander, lemon juice, and mint.
In the Indian summers, it’s very hot, so making this Jal Jeera Masala is a good way to cool off. Consequently, it’s one of those special dishes my mom used to cook every summer.

What is Jaljeera | Summer Refreshing Drink | Jal Jeera Recipe?
Jaljeera | Summer Refreshing Drink | Jal Jeera Recipe where Jal means water in English, and Jeera means cumin. So literally it is cumin water. However, it does not taste like cumin water. I know its taste because I have had cumin water numerous times.
In India, Jal Jeera is traditionally prepared from a mix of soothing spices. Fresh mint, rock salt, black pepper, roasted cumin seeds, dried mango powder, and pepper powder are the most commonly used ingredients in Jal Jeera.
You can get dry mango powder in any Indian store as well as tamarind pulp or chutney too. I used to get them in Walmart too.
So it’s quite a treat for your taste buds. To make it more refreshing, the mint leaves and coriander leaves can also be added to it along with some ice cubes and lemon juice before it’s served.
A great appetizer, this drink has beneficial properties for digestion and is a great choice for upset stomachs and in the summer. It’s also cooling, so it’s ideal to consume during the hot weather.
My Jaljeera is always served with a crispy boondi on top before serving; you can try it too.
Ingredients
- ½ cup – Fresh mint leaves
- ½ cup – Fresh coriander leaves
- ½ inch – Ginger
- 2 tbsp – Lime or lemon juice
- ½ tsp – Roasted cumin powder
- ¼ tsp – Hing/Asafoetida
- 2 tsp – Black salt
- 2 tsp – Salt
- ¼ tsp – Black pepper powder
- 1 tsp – Sugar
- 2 tsp – Dry mango powder/Amchur powder
- 2 tbsp – Tamarind pulp or Imli chutney
- 4 cups – Water
- Boondi for decoration.
Tamarind Pulp – Soak 1 tablespoon tightly packed tamarind in ¼ cup hot water for about 20 minutes. Tamarind seeds must be removed. and then grind it along with that water along with other ingredients. It’s okay if you are using ready-made tamarind chutney.
Jeera or cumin seeds – Good for digestion & peppery flavors.
Amchur powder or dry mango powder – This gives it sourness and tartness.
Mint leaves – Cooling and digestive properties. Fragrant and sweet.
Black pepper – Spicey and pungent, it imparts a punch to drinks and is also believed to be beneficial for digestion.
Black salt – Adds a lot of flavors and has digestive properties.
Ginger Powder – Also produces heat, so it is optional. It is good for digestion.
Tamarind pulp or chutney – It adds a sour taste to beverages and is good for cooling.
Boondi – Crisp chickpea tiny balls you can buy online or from the store or its optional

How To Make Jaljeera | Summer Refreshing Drink | Jal Jeera Recipe Step By Step With Photo:
- Wash the coriander and mint leaves nicely and put them in a blender.
- Prepare the paste by blending them with ginger and adding 1/3 cup water.
- Transfer the mixture or paste into a larger bowl.
- Add lime or lemon juice, other ingredients like roasted cumin powder, hing or asafoetida, black salt, salt, black pepper powder, sugar, dry mango powder/amchur powder, and tamarind pulp or Imli chutney, and mix well.
- Refrigerate for 3-4 hours before serving. Serve with some ice cubes and boondi. Enjoy.
How to make Jaljeera Powder?
The ingredients for Jaljeera Powder are as follows. Fresh Greens or tamarind pulp are sometimes unavailable or too expensive for some people. In such cases, Jaljeera Powder is perfect to make when you feel like drinking it. Here are the ingredients for making Jaljeera Powder.
- Dry mint powder – 4 tsp
- Roasted cumin powder – 4 tsp
- Black pepper Powder – ½ tsp
- Citric acid – 2 tsp
- Ginger Powder – 1 tsp
- Hing – ¼ tsp
- Black salt – 2 tsp
- Salt – 2 tsp
- Sugar – 1 tsp
- Dry mango powder – 2 tsp
If fresh greens are out of stock or too costly, then you can simply make these below two powders easily at home whenever available and make them at home and store. Rest everything will be easily available online or at the supermarket.
For dry mint powder just need to take the mint leaves then to be thoroughly cleaned and washed nicely, so you can drain the water. Then line the leaves on a kitchen towel or newspaper. The leaves should be dried in the sun for 6-8 hours until crisp and then ground to a fine powder.
For Roasted cumin powder, the seeds should be roasted at medium heat so as not to burn. Otherwise, the taste won’t be as good. Roast the seeds continuously, grind them only when they are cooled, and store the powder for up to six months in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
Now after making the above first two powder now grind all the ingredients together and then add 1 tbsp of the Jal jeera powder to 1 glass of chilled water. Top with ice cubes and lemon juice. Serve immediately.

Storage Suggestions
Jal Jeera does not maintain its freshness for too long. Using fresh mint and coriander, this recipe can turn bitter if kept too long. A suggestion is to make it, refrigerate it for at least 3-4 hours before serving, then discard it.
If you freeze Jaljeera, it will not taste as good as fresh. I recommend making it fresh.
