About Shikanji – Best Summer Drinks Recipe

In the summers, we made Shikanji – Best Summer Drinks sometimes and kept gulping it down. It used to be made in bulk and kept in the refrigerator. Besides tasting great, you get lots of vitamin C in one drink.

We are experiencing such a heatwave right now. Almost summers in most of the places now. My fridge is going to be stocked with shikanji 😉

Whenever I came home from school in the scorching heat, I was given a tall glass filled with shikanji to give my body immediate relief from the heat. I sipped on this summer cooler during the day from a pitcher in the refrigerator.

While living in Kolkata, I was surrounded by lots of shikanji stalls during the summer. There are nimbu (lemon) pani (water)stalls in Mumbai as well

Shikanji vs. Nimbu Pani: what’s the difference? It’s the same drink… Just a different name. These two refreshing summer drinks differ only in that the spices have been added. Shikanji uses a spice mix instead of just water, lime juice, sugar, and salt, while nimbu paani uses only water, lime juice, sugar, and salt.

Lime is a key component of this drink. This drink is made by mixing lime juice with spicy spice mix (shikanji masala), sugar, and mint leaves, and then adding water or club soda on top.

Lime is a major ingredient in this drink, so it’s rich in vitamin C, which helps the body make collagen, absorb iron, and heal wounds. It is also extremely beneficial to the skin and hair.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp – Cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp – Black pepper (whole)
  • 1 tsp – Coriander seeds
  • 1 tbsp – Chaat masala
  • 1 tsp – Black salt
  • 1 tsp – Salt
  • 2 tbsp – Lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp – Powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp – Shikanji masala
  • Mint leaves for decoration
  • Ice cubes for garnishing
  • 750 ml – Soda water

Limes – These are the main ingredients. Drinks made with lime add just the right amount of tang to the drink, making them refreshing and delicious.

Shikanji Masala – It is also known as Shikanji masala, which is a spice mixture that is mixed with lime juice. Roasting and grinding roasted whole spices such as cumin seeds, coriander seeds, and black peppercorns produce this masala. After that, chaat masala, black salt, and regular salt are added to it.

Every time I make the spice mix, I double or triple it and store it in my pantry. This is handy to have whenever I need to make this drink.

Sugar – Sugar is added to shikanji to sweeten it. It gets easy to dissolve powdered sugar (the sugar is ground in a grinder) in water. Confectioner’s sugar, sometimes referred to as powdered sugar, should NEVER be used. The drink is altered by the cornstarch added to it.

If you are looking for a healthier alternative, you can also use jaggery or honey instead.

Mint Leaves – There is no need for mint leaves, but I love the flavor they add to this shikanji, making it extremely refreshing.  Great for garnishing.

Soda or Water – Shikanji can be topped with chilled soda or water. If you prefer fizzy drinks, you may top the shikanji with club soda. If the drink needs to be chilled, add some ice cubes to the glasses.

In addition to water and club soda, Coca-Cola, Sprite, or ginger ale can also be used.
