How To Make Air Fryer Onion Petals Recipe Step By Step With Photo:
- Peel the sweet onions and then proceed to cut them into medium-sized wedges, ensuring that the wedges are of similar size to promote even cooking. I have kept 2 layers of onion mostly.
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, mix together the buttermilk or milk (if using just milk, add a small amount of white vinegar) along with the eggs. Continuously stir the mixture until it is thoroughly blended and smooth.
- In a separate medium-sized bowl, thoroughly mix together the all-purpose flour, cornflour, cayenne pepper (adjust to ¼ teaspoon for milder breading or ½ teaspoon for spicier breading), paprika, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and black pepper.
- Stir the ingredients well to ensure they are evenly combined.
- Now coat the onion pieces with the flour, cornflour, and spices mixture.
- Now with the help of a tong take out the petals on a plate.
- Now place the coated onion pieces into the buttermilk and egg batter, making sure they are entirely coated.
- Then again dip them in the flour mixture. If you wish to speed up the process, you can use a slotted spoon to transfer the onions back to the cornflour and flour mixture, allowing any excess liquid to drain off. Note: I have used a tong here and worked individually on each onion petal.
- Stir the onion pieces well to ensure they are thoroughly coated with the flour mixture.
- Now with the help of a tong or slotted spoon again dip the onion petal in the egg and buttermilk batter.
- Now pour the onion petal into the breadcrumb and with the help of a fork coat well from all sides. Prepare all the onion petals and place them on a plate. Keep aside.
- Now spray or brush olive oil or any cooking oil of your choice on the air fryer tray and I have placed a parchment paper on the tray. You can do the same process in your air fryer basket too.
- Now place some onion petals on the air fryer tray or basket. Do not overcrowd them.
- Now apple or spray a generous amount of oil on top of each onion petal.
- Now air fry for 15 to 20 minutes at 400 degrees F. Note: Mine is a large air fryer oven if using an air fryer basket then maybe 10 to 15 minutes will be enough for the onion petals to be ready. Flip in between to ensure even cooking.
- Once done take it out carefully with the help of a tong.
- Delicious air fryer onion petals are ready to be served with a choice of your dip or sauce.
Important Suggestion To Keep In Mind
- Slice Uniformly: Try to slice the onions into even-sized petals. This ensures that they cook evenly and you won’t end up with some pieces undercooked while others are overcooked.
- Soak in Buttermilk or Milk: Before breading the onion petals, you can soak them in buttermilk or milk (you can add a little white vinegar to regular milk as a substitute for buttermilk) for about 30 minutes. This helps to tenderize the onions and adds extra flavor.
- Preheat the Air Fryer: Always preheat your air fryer before cooking the onion petals. This ensures that the air fryer is at the right temperature when you put the petals in, resulting in better browning and crispiness.
- Use Parchment Paper or Cooking Spray: To prevent the onion petals from sticking to the air fryer basket, you can line the basket with parchment paper or lightly coat it with cooking spray.
- Bread the Petals Well: When coating the onion petals with the flour mixture, make sure they are evenly and thoroughly coated. You can gently press the breading onto the petals to ensure it adheres well.
- Shake Off Excess Breading: After dipping the onion petals in the buttermilk and egg mixture, use a slotted spoon to transfer them back to the flour mixture. Shake off any excess liquid before coating them again. This helps to create a crispier texture.
- Don’t Overcrowd the Air Fryer: Arrange the coated onion petals in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding to allow hot air to circulate around them evenly, ensuring they cook uniformly.
- Spray with Cooking Oil: Before air frying, you can lightly spray the onion petals with cooking oil. This helps to enhance the crispiness of the breading.
- Flip or Shake Midway: If you notice that the onion petals are not browning evenly, you can gently flip them or shake the basket midway through the cooking process.
- Adjust Cooking Time and Temperature: Cooking times may vary depending on the thickness of the onion petals and the air fryer model. Keep an eye on them and adjust the cooking time and temperature accordingly for best results.
- Serve Immediately: Air-fried onion petals are best enjoyed immediately while they are still hot and crispy.
Storage Suggestion
Storing Easy Air Fryer Onion Petals is similar to storing any other type of leftover cooked food. To keep them fresh and maintain their crispy texture, follow these storage suggestions:
- Cool Down: Allow the air-fried onion petals to cool down to room temperature before storing them. This prevents condensation and helps preserve their crispiness.
- Use Airtight Containers: Transfer the onion petals to an airtight container. Airtight containers help prevent moisture from getting in and keep the onion petals crispy.
- Avoid Stacking: Try to avoid stacking the onion petals on top of each other in the container, as this can cause them to lose their crispiness.
- Refrigeration: If you plan to consume the onion petals within the next 1-2 days, store them in the refrigerator. While refrigeration can cause some loss of crispiness, it’s still better than leaving them at room temperature where they can quickly become stale.
- Freezing (Optional): If you want to extend the storage time, you can freeze the air-fried onion petals. Lay them out on a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze them for a few hours until they are solid. Then, transfer the frozen petals to an airtight container or a freezer bag. Frozen onion petals can last for several weeks, but keep in mind that they might lose some of their crispiness when thawed.
- Reheating: To reheat the onion petals, avoid using the microwave, as it can make them soggy. Instead, use an oven or an air fryer again to reheat them. This will help restore their crispiness.
Remember that the texture of air-fried onion petals may not be as perfect after storing compared to when they were freshly made. It’s best to enjoy them right after cooking for the crispiest experience.
